Intercoolers

Bain Racing Pontiac Intercooler

When designing our Intercoolers, it is important for us to spend the time to get to know your needs as well as your engine setup and intended purpose, because at Bain Racing we understand all too well that the horsepower gains with the right intercooler.

Some things to consider when designing your intercooler, which will inevitably make the difference between a good or bad intercooler and the impact it will have on your engine and the loss of horsepower. For example by spending the time to choose and design an efficient intercooler, we have seen 80-100hp increases on mild setups, and 200-300hp increases in the high-end big horsepower setups, so as you can see there is a major difference between a well designed intercooler and a bad one.

There has been a lot of debate about what intercoolers to use over the years. At Bain Racing we use a variety of coolers to suit a variety of needs. These are Air/Air, Water/Air, Ice/Air and Ice Water/Air. All of which are great intercoolers when used in the right circumstance and design. We are experts in helping you choose what type of intercooler setup to use for your engine setup. Our intercoolers can be made to accurate tolerances and this means a perfect fit every time.

Another important point to make is that “bigger is not always better”. Your engine requires the intercooler to have the correct amount of square mm tank taper/volume and tube stack height in order to be affective.

For example; a 600 x 300 x 52mm intercooler core is more efficient than a 600 x 300 x 73mm core. But the 73mm core flows more; this is because they both have the same amount of surface area of 180,000mm2. Thermo dynamics tells us that if we are not supplying the intercooler with more air but increase the flow, then efficiency drops, this is one of the key reasons why at Bain Racing we design every intercooler specifically for every job.
